Ang Mo Kio literally means ‘Westerner’s bridge’ in Hokkien, a term derived from Westerners who had settled in this region in the early days. The area has very recently undergone extensive redevelopment, of which residential development plans account for a majority. The residential segment with HDB estates comprising of apartment and condominium blocks available throughout the region, has achieved immense popularity. Over 54,000 housing units serve the residential purposes of about 280,000 local residents.

The availability of all the amenities needed for modern urban lifestyle, including shopping malls, entertainment complexes, recreational facilities as well as a convenient and efficient transportation networks in the region has made Ang Mo Kio HDB estate a preferred place for residential property investments.

The Ang Mo Kio HDB estate is located in the North region of the city. The neighbouring regions are Bishan (District 20), Sin Ming (District 20), Seletar (District 28) and Yio Chu Kang (District 19).

The area has been divided into several sub-zones for the ease of planning and development, especially of the residential unit blocks. They are roughly segregated into the following clusters (not necessarily in  electorate or GRC division:

  • Ang Mo Kio Town Centre (Blocks 7xx)
  • Chong Boon (Block 4xx)
  • Cheng San (Blocks 5xx)
  • Teck Ghee (Block 3xx)
  • Kebun Bahru (Blocks 1xx, 2xx)
  • Shangri-la (Landed Enclave)
  • Sembawang Hills (Landed Enclave)
  • Yio Chu Kang (Blocks 1xx, 6xx)

As it is evident, the region of Ang Mo Kio has had a very successful massive urban development in the recent years, thereby allowing Ang Mo Kio HDB estate to become one of the prime residential location in Singapore. This rise in popularity has not only been influenced by the excellent living conditions within the HDB estate, but also by the developed-yet-tranquil cultural cityscape of the region of Ang Mo Kio.
